Quantum Lunch: Landauer's principle and the energy cost of measurement

Speaker: David Reeb, Leibniz Universität Hannover.

Abstract: I will first review Landauer's principle, concerning the heat dissipated during information erasure, and present a rigorous statement and microscopic derivation in quantum theory. This will allow to discuss finite-size effects and achievability issues. Finally, I will use the results to derive better bounds on the energy cost of implementing a quantum measurement than previously known, and apply them to quantum control and error correction.
