New publication in Nature Physics by QMATH researcher showcases the limitations of near-term quantum devices

The QMATH postdoc Daniel Stilck França recently published the article “Limitations of optimization algorithms on noisy quantum devices” in Nature Physics (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41567-021-01356-3). He wrote the article in collaboration with Raul García-Patrón from the University of Edinburgh after he visited the center for a few months in late 2019.

They explore to what extent the noise present in near-term quantum devices constrains their potential to solve various optimization problems. They obtain new techniques to bound the performance of quantum devices under noise that suggest that significant speedups for classical optimization problems are unlikely in the presence of noise.
