QMATH Masterclass on Quantum Error Correction and Fault-Tolerance

Conference graphics

Copenhagen, 17 to 21 August 2026

Quantum information theory has developed substantially over the past 30 years. As increasingly complex quantum hardware becomes available, the sensitivity of quantum systems to noise and decoherence remains one of the central obstacles to building scalable quantum devices.

Quantum error correction and fault-tolerance provide the framework for addressing this problem. They provide ways of protecting and processing quantum information reliably, despite errors arising from imperfect operations and interactions with the environment.

Since the first quantum error-correcting codes were discovered, the field has developed into a central part of quantum information theory, with close connections to coding theory, many-body quantum physics, and the theory of computation. Key examples include stabilizer and subsystem codes, surface-code architectures, decoding algorithms, quantum low-density parity-check codes, and fault-tolerant schemes for implementing logical operations.

The aim of this year’s QMATH Masterclass is to present these developments in a coherent way, identifying the key ideas and techniques behind quantum error correction and fault-tolerance, as well as showcasing some of their important applications in quantum information theory and quantum computing.

Target audience

This master class will be of interest for PhD students and advanced master students in mathematics, physics or computer science. It should serve as a way of entering the broad and vibrant field of quantum information theory. The masterclass will consist of blackboard lectures, giving an introduction to applications of representation theory in quantum information science.
There will be a poster session, where all participants have the opportunity to present their research.

We do expect that students have basic knowledge about quantum information theory, however, we offer a more basic tutorial with some background on decoherence and basics quantum error correction targeted towards master students on Friday August 14th prior to the Masterclass.

Don't hesitate to get in touch with the organizers if you have questions!

Location

The master class will take place at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Copenhagen is a beautiful harbor city, famous for being among the safest and most enjoyable places to live in the world.
Participants of the master class will have the opportunity to explore the city from the water during an excursion. August is the second warmest month of the year in Copenhagen with about 14 hours of daylight.
